This course will benefit plein air painters with the summer approaching and will explore the infinite range of colours available to the artist using six pigments plus white. This is particularly useful in plein air painting but also allows the artist to paint in colour harmonies without having to carry a paint box full of a wide range of pigments. We will use Golden Open Acrylics to prolong the drying time of the acrylics.
Supply List: Paper towel; Palette – I use a Masterson stay wet palette, either size (I use the smaller one for plein air and studio work). I prepare it according to the instructions and then add a second piece of regular palette paper on top of the stay-wet paper; Brushes, your choice, should include small & medium rounds and flats – bring your favorite inexpensive brushes; Ground – We will be experimenting to some extent so use inexpensive panels – if wood you should put an alkyd sealer on, any colour, preferably light toned – if canvas panels tone with any light colour. I use Golden Liquid Acrylics diluted partially with water; Photo reference material for subject matter; Paint box or other tabletop easel, water container for cleaning brushes, carrier for wet paintings; Plastic bag for waste material; Any other gear that you use when painting in acrylics.
Acrylic Paints – One of each colour group, any brand – I use Golden Open Acrylics for plein air painting and for studio painting I use Open titanium white, Yellow Hansa Light; Alizarin Permanent; Ultramarine Blue; Cadmium Orange; Phthalo Green (any shade – your preference); Dioxazine Purple. It’s important to use these exact pigments for optimum results. As an option, you could use regular acrylics for the six colours plus the Open White.
