ADDING BODY PIGMENTS TO YOUR TRANSPARENT WATERCOLOUR PAINTINGS

If you’re interested in adding body pigments to your transparent watercolour paintings, then this is the course for you!  Teressa will show you how to use Gouache with watercolour to add a new dimension to your paintings.    Gouache is an opaque water-based paint that is easily used much the same as watercolour, but has the ability to cover already painted areas.    It may be used in a thicker manner to cover and in a thinner way to veil, and is always more vivid.     Teressa gives lots of demos and provides a fun and relaxing atmosphere for all to produce your best in a workshop.  We will focus on painting leaves, not written in stone, we can focus on something else too.

Supply List

As you’ve all been painting for a bit, my supply list is intended to let you know what supplies I use.   Please bring what you already have.   If the item is optional I’ll put an asterisk in front of it.

–3 watercolour paint brushes….#6 round, #14 round, and 1″ flat.   Bring what you already have as well; –2 or 3 sheets of Arches 140 lb. Rough watercolour paper.   Please cut the sheets into quarters before coming to the workshop; –white watercolour palette with lid  (enough spaces for at least 12 pigments and a fairly large mixing area); –a separate white palette for mixing gouache.   This can be a large plastic lid or something like that; –small cosmetic sponge  (a small natural sea  sponge, not the little white triangles); –*small cellulose sponge; –absorbant paper towels; –3M masking tape 3/4″  (3M brand is a must); –small Exacto knife; –Plexi glass or equivalent, to tape paper onto. Min. size.. 13″ x 17″.  *If you have two you might like to bring another; –a roll of plastic wrap (like Saran or Handi Wrap); –2 small spray bottles, one with a trigger nozzle and one with a pump nozzle.; –table salt in a shaker; –2B pencil  (I use a *mechanical pencil with a 0.5 size lead); –kneaded eraser; —Watercolour paints….tubes.    These colours are my workhorse colours…. Thalo Blue, Cobalt Blue, Thalo Green (DaVinci), Burnt Sienna, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Scarlet Red, Yellow Ochre and Cadmium Yellow Deep or *Medium.   Colours I also use and love….Shadow Green, *Cadmium Red Orange, *Cadmium Orange, Permanent Rose, *Ultramarine Blue, *Quinacridone Burnt Orange,  *Naples Yellow, and *Cobalt Teal, *Lunar Black (Daniel Smith)

–Gouache paints…tubes.   If you don’t have or don’t want to buy many colours, you can get by with just buying any White and Black.   Since the gouache colours will provide a more intensely coloured painting you might want (and I recommend)  to purchase some colours.    The addition of a blue, red and yellow will mix to make many colours, but of course you can bring as many as you like; –photographs of simple, up-close leaves, and also of tree trunks.   The simpler the better; –hair dryer
